The Congregation of Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception was founded by a Pole, St. Stanislaus Papczyński in 1670, and its statutes were approved by Pope Pius VI in 1787. Blessed George Matulaitis-Matulewicz initiated a great work reforming the Marian Fathers and the Congregation’s constitution, changes of which were approved by Pope Pius X in 1910. Blessed George placed a focus on the importance of the love “for Christ and the Church”.
The community spread mainly in Poland, Lithuania, and Russia. According to their constitutions, which were last amended in 1969/70 in accordance with the spiritual renewal introduced by the Second Vatican Council, the Marian Fathers serve the Church by performing various works in response to the needs of modern times.
Today the community is active in North America, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, England, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Rwanda, and other countries. The General Curia has had its headquarters in Rome since 1926.
